UST Map

About UST Map

UST Map is a free, open directory of underground storage tank (UST) facilities and leaking underground storage tank (LUST) release sites across the United States.

Data Source

All data is sourced from the U.S. EPA UST Finder, a publicly available database maintained by the Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA compiles this data from state UST programs across the country.

What Are USTs?

Underground storage tanks (USTs) are tanks and connected piping that have at least 10% of their volume underground. They typically store petroleum products or hazardous substances. There are approximately 736,000+ UST facilities tracked in the EPA database.

What Are LUST Releases?

LUST (Leaking Underground Storage Tank) releases are confirmed or suspected releases of petroleum or hazardous substances from UST systems. These sites require investigation and often cleanup. There are 510,000+ LUST releases in our database, with status tracked as "Open" (active contamination) or "Closed" (remediated/resolved).

Methodology

We ingest the complete EPA UST Finder dataset, geocode facilities and release sites, and present them in a searchable, map-based interface. Data is refreshed periodically. Proximity data (population, wells, floodplain) comes directly from the EPA dataset.
