LUST Release
A documented incident where petroleum or hazardous substances have escaped from an underground storage tank system.
A LUST release refers to the documented escape of petroleum products or hazardous substances from an underground storage tank system into the environment. Releases can occur from the tank itself, connected piping, or dispensing equipment. Common causes include corrosion, structural failure, improper installation, and operational errors.
Each LUST release is tracked with a status of either 'Open' (active investigation or cleanup is ongoing) or 'Closed' (the release has been adequately addressed and no further action is required). The transition from open to closed status requires meeting state-specific cleanup standards for soil and groundwater contamination.
LUST releases are reported to state regulatory agencies and entered into the EPA's national database. Key information tracked includes the substance released, the date reported, the cleanup status, proximity to drinking water sources, and the population potentially affected. This data helps prioritize cleanup efforts and inform community right-to-know initiatives.
